The Spaces Between
A typographic exploration of free speech, balancing expression, restraint, and the noise of societal conversation.
This project explored the concept of space—physical, metaphorical, and conceptual—and how it can be visually represented through typography.
I focused my exploration on the conceptual space of free speech. My research was inspired by contemporary debates, particularly how public figures navigate the boundaries of expression. At the time, ongoing debates surrounding statements made by well-known personalities led me to examine both historical and present-day perspectives on free speech. Through this research, I recognised that language evolves alongside society, with interpretations changing over time. This highlighted the complexity of the subject, as opinions shift depending on context.
My visual outcome delves into the evolution of free speech, visualising both its power and the diversity of opinions it generates. I incorporated negative space to symbolise the concept of ‘white,’ allowing absence to convey meaning within the composition. Repetition played a key role, illustrating the overwhelming ‘noise’ that forms when many voices interact in public debate.
To further reinforce this theme, I placed words over mouths, creating a visual metaphor for the tension between expression and restraint. This element suggests that, in certain contexts, speech may be censored, self-restrained, or silenced due to its potential to offend. Through this design approach, I aimed to create a piece that not only acknowledges the significance of free speech but also encourages viewers to consider its complexities and the responsibility that comes with it.
